Linux
Linux is truly open source and the only operating system in this article that is. Where I think the strengths of Linux really are, is whenever you need to have a lightweight, solid server that does a specific job.
Say you want to run a web server Linux runs the majority of websites across the internet.
Why you might ask?
Well, that’s because it is free, stable, and secure.
The Hardest Part of using Linux is generally learning the command line as there is a learning curve. I think the GUI and ease of use fall short compared to the other operating systems whenever you use Linux as a desktop.
I would prefer to use Windows/MacOS desktop environments and specifically Linux for every server on the planet.
I’m also not saying the desktop environment is bad, as you can customize it in almost any way possible, out of the box though Windows and Mac come pretty much ready to go.
Unlike Windows and Mac which only have a major release of an OS. Linux has tons and I mean tons of distributions to choose from. Choosing a “distro” can be a bit overwhelming, so I usually stick with a Redhat line or a Debian-based distribution.
Windows
Everyone and their brother, mother, dog, and cat has heard of Microsoft Windows. Or, at least the company Microsoft at this point.
Microsoft is what almost every business in the world runs for their office. Windows holds the biggest market share in the desktop and laptop world. Windows from my experience have been running EVERYWHERE.
There is a reason for that, that’s because it has a great catalog of applications and legacy applications that has been supported for many years.
Windows is probably the easiest to set up and run right out of the box. It holds your hand a lot through setup processes.
Since Windows 8 the operating system has become way more secure than it ever has been. Windows 10/11 has become pretty easy to update drivers and more.
The biggest hurdle you might have with Windows is now that it watches almost everything you do. It’s not “free” although most times if you buy a PC it comes with a license with Windows Home or Professional.
Windows is fairly cheap compared to the Apple Mac OS.
Windows much like Linux can basically be installed on anything. Although with Windows 11 with security being a bigger issue these days requires TPM chips to boot hard drives securely. This isn’t a huge deal but it could be to someone that wants a modern operating system on older hardware.
When it comes to Window’s strong point I would say it’s the easiest one to jump into, with it being the best to play video games on and Microsoft Office.

MAC OS
I have to say that before I dive deep into macOS I’m honestly not the biggest Apple fan or Mac OS fan.
If you watched the video above you might understand why. It’s not that I HATE MacOS but I’ve never used the latest and greatest version of it.
The barrier to entry to Macos is quite expensive. I’ve always considered owning and running a Macintosh computer more of a status symbol than anything.
Macs do a few things great though. They are sleek and very stable computers.
They don’t offer much variety but that means all the software that runs on them pretty much runs on them all. The isn’t any difference in hardware and you can’t change out a million different parts like you could with a Linux or Windows-based computer. That is a good and bad thing if you like variety then you won’t get that. But, if you want a stable operating system that runs and performs well with the applications designed specifically for macs then MAC OS might be right up your alley.
Conclusion
Whenever it comes to Gaming I choose Windows all the way. I wouldn’t 100% not really want to game on anything else. Linux has gotten better, and Macs well they don’t support most games.
Now when it comes to running a server, as long as it is not an active directory I would choose to run a Linux-based server OS.
Mac OS in my opinion doesn’t offer much that would make me choose it over the other 2. It’s stable and more Unix based than Linux. If you want to show off your sleek mac in your next office meeting with a status symbol.
